YMCA of Greater Boston (first) opens.

March 11, 1852

Originally the Boston YMCA, it is founded by George Van Der Lip, Thomas Valentine Sullivan, and other evangelical members of local churches, and located initially in rented rooms at 228 Washington Street. The first Young Men’s Christian Association chapter in the U.S. (it was founded in London on June 6, 1844), it was founded at a meeting at the Spring Lane Chapel of the Old South Church on December 29, 1851 [15]. It moves to the Tremont Temple (second) later in the year, and to new buildings on Tremont Street (third) in 1872, Boylston Street (fourth) in 1883,* and its current location (fifth) on Huntington Avenue in 1912.*
